Django turns 20!

14 Jul, 2025

On July 13th, 2005, Jacob Kaplan-Moss made the first commit to what would become Django – a powerful, elegant web framework for perfectionists with deadlines. Fast forward twenty years and over 400 releases later, Django has grown into a global movement. It powers everything from personal blogs to large-scale platforms, helping developers build secure, maintainable websites faster than ever. With its clean design philosophy, built-in admin, ORM, and batteries-included approach, Django continues to be a favorite among Python web developers. And now, it’s time to celebrate two decades of impact, code, and community – Happy 20th birthday, Django!

To mark this joyful milestone, the Django community is inviting everyone to join in – whether that’s by hosting a small get-together, joining an online chat, or just raising a toast from your keyboard. No gesture is too small when it comes to showing love for the framework that’s helped so many ideas come to life. As a birthday gift, the Django Software Foundation is hoping to gather 200 new donors, with at least 20 becoming recurring supporters. Whether it’s $20 from you or your company, every bit helps keep the framework thriving. Once you’ve donated, don’t forget to tag Django on Mastodon, Bluesky, X, or LinkedIn – they’d love to thank you personally. Let’s make these next 20 days count, and build the next 20 years of Django together.
